Yes - All SoBo, Flip Flop and section hikers starting at Katahdin need reservations to camp in the park. Reservations can be made online at https://reservation.baxterpark.org or by calling 207.723.5140 (winter hours Monday through Friday 8a to 4p Eastern Time; summer hours 7 days a week 8a to 4p).
It is 17 miles from Millinocket to the BSP south gate and then it is another 8 miles to Katahdin Stream campground.
Yes. The climb to Baxter Peak and back can take up to 8-10 hours. We strongly suggest not to think of hiking out of the park after climbing Katahdin. It would be more than a 20 mile day if you attempted to hike to Abol Bridge and there is no stealth camping allowed in Baxter State Park. You can make your reservation for Katahdin Stream Campground on the Baxter State Park website.
Make an overnight camping reservation at Katahdin Stream Campground to camp with your loved one or make a day use parking reservation to drive yourself in to the park. Both of these can be done online or on the phone at 207-723-5140 with Baxter State Park.
Baxter State Park and the Katahdin trail heads are very busy places all summer long. Many hikers have no problem getting a ride out of the park from a friendly day hiker.
Making arrangements to get a ride out of the park ahead of time can be difficult. There is no cell phone service in Baxter State Park.
From September 1 to October 15, after the park peak season, we offer a free shuttle out of the park and to the lodge every afternoon for our guests. Any hiker wishing to stay elsewhere in town will only pay $10.
