Earl Shaffer Room

Equipped with two twin beds, this room was Earl Shaffer’s final stay when completing his 50th anniversary hike of the Appalachian Trail. Earl Shaffer, known as the first recorded thru-hiker or “the crazy one,” originally completed the Appalachian Trail in 1948 northbound, followed by a southbound thru-hike in 1965, and one final northbound thru-hike in 1998. Experience history with a stay in this charming space.

100-Mile Wilderness Room

Perfect for friends or family hiking the Katahdin region, enjoy this relaxing space that includes two twin beds. The 100-Mile Wilderness is the most remote section of the Appalachian Trail. Spanning 100 miles between Abol Bridge and Monson, you will find no towns or stores during this stretch of true wilderness.

Katahdin Room

Kick back in a queen bed in this picturesque room as you explore the Katahdin region. Fitted with original trail signs from the mountain and a beautiful portrait of Katahdin, you’ll experience comfort in your home away from home.

Nimblewill Room

Meredith J. Eberhart, known as Nimblewill Nomad, visited with us and stayed in this room during his record breaking thru-hike in 2021. Having amassed tens of thousands of miles on foot, Nimblewill set out to become the oldest person to thru-hike the AT, at the age of 83. Enjoy this spacious room filled with artwork, history, and a queen bed during your stay with us.

Family/Group Suites

This cozy space is separate from the rest of the Hostel and will be your own little haven. The suites have their own kitchen, dining area, and bathroom. While we do not offer B&B style food, the kitchen within the suite has all of the cookware and appliances you will need to prepare your own meals. Family/Group Suite 1 includes a private room with a queen bed and two futon sofas in the living room. Family/Group Suite 2 has five twin beds. On the premises is a coin-operated communal washer & dryer for your use as well. The suites have air-conditioning in the summer months.

The Hiker Yearbook Bus

The most famous bus along the Appalachian Trail, thousands of hikers have ridden in it, thousands of hikers have been brought together by it, and thousands more know of it as a symbol in the Trail community. For seven hiking seasons Mathew “Odie” Norman traveled up and down the Trail attempting to bring each year’s class of hikers together. His vision came in the form of an annual hiker family album and his passion was felt throughout the Trail community from Georgia to Maine. Whether you needed a ride to the nearest town, saved from a storm on top of a mountain, or just spent a few minutes hanging out inside the Bus, Odie was there for every hiker that needed him. And his famed Hiker Yearbook Bus was a symbol of hope, happiness, and community.

Odie left us the Bus just as he lived and traveled in it, with all of his memories and keepsakes exactly where he put them. Linens are included with your stay. The bathroom and kitchen is located in the bunkhouse. The Bus has air-conditioning in the summer months.
